Account and signing in
I registered but never got the confirmation e-mail.
Check your spam folder first: the mail comes from info@billvote.co.uk. Nothing there? Open the app, sign in and choose Send again; you can also change the address on that screen if you typed it wrong.
Without a confirmed address you cannot sign in: that is deliberate, so nobody can register with someone else's e-mail.
I forgot my password.
On the sign-in screen tap Forgot password. You get a link by e-mail that is valid for one hour; it signs you in straight away and lets you choose a new password.
Can I change my name or username?
Yes, under your profile, Edit. Your username is what others use to mention you (@name); your display name is what they see.
How do I delete my account?
Under your profile, Edit, all the way down: Delete account. It is immediate and cannot be undone. If you can no longer sign in, see delete your account.
Bills and voting
Where do the bills come from?
From the UK Parliament's Bills API, every hour: every bill of the current session with its stages, publications and sponsors. Divisions come from the Commons Votes and Lords Votes APIs, members from the Members API.
What does my vote do?
Your vote is a poll among users of the app. It has no official status and nobody in Parliament sees it. The result is shown in aggregate, split by age group, education, gender and party preference; a group with fewer than three votes stays hidden.
Why do I have to fill in my age, gender, education and party before I can vote?
Because the result is split by those groups; a vote without them would fall outside every group. The details stay private unless you switch them on for your profile, and they are only ever shown in aggregate.
Can I change my vote?
No. A vote on a bill or division is final, which is why the app asks you to confirm.
What is “In short”?
A summary written by an AI model from the bill's explanatory notes, or from the second reading debate in Hansard when the notes are not available to us. It is an aid, not the law: the official document is always leading and is one tap away.
The Commons stage says “2nd reading” but only the first reading has happened.
That is how Parliament's own data works: the current stage is the next stage on the list as soon as the previous one is over. The dates in the timeline say what has actually taken place.
Notifications
Which notifications can I get?
A new vote on a government bill, the result on a bill you follow or voted on, new posts from parties you follow, mentions, likes, comments, friend requests, the statement of the day and your week in review. Each kind has its own switch under Settings.
I switched a kind off but still see it in the list.
The switch controls the push notification. The list in the app keeps every notification as an archive.
Privacy and data
Who can see my profile details?
Only what you switch on. Age, gender, education, occupation and party preference are off by default and are only ever used in aggregate for the vote results.
Is my data sold or used for advertising?
No. There are no adverts and no data is sold. See the privacy policy.
MPs, peers and parties
I am an MP or a peer. Can I claim my page?
Yes. Open your page in the app and choose Claim this page. We check the request against the e-mail address Parliament publishes for you; if your account uses that address, the link is confirmed straight away. Otherwise send us one line from that address.
Can I run a party page?
Open the party page and choose Claim. An administrator reviews the request. A party page can post updates and publish its position on every bill.
Where do the photos and registers come from?
From Parliament's Members API: the official portraits and the Register of Members' Financial Interests, career history, committees and contact details. Every member page links to the source.
Still stuck?
E-mail info@billvote.co.uk. Describe as precisely as you can what you did, what you expected and what happened instead, and mention your device and whether you used the app or the web version. If it is about an account you can no longer get into, write from the address you registered with.
